Israel FM radio received in Crete?

Hi,

the short and general question is: Under ideal conditions, over what distance can FM radio station with a transmission power of pmax=6,3 W be received?

Whole story: Last Wednesday, while on holiday in Crete, I was driving a windy and steep road from Ziros down to the coastal town Xerokampos in South-East Crete. Along a along the road I was able to hear a foreign radio station at 100.0 MHz. I suspect the language to be hebrew !? (for sure it was not greek). The music was international 80s/90s/today's pop music (predominantly english). Shortly before Xeroxampos the station vanished in static. Driving the other direction, the station would be superimposed by a greek station. Unfortunately I did not record a station id, so I did some internet research now that I returned home. Using FMScan.org I was able to identify a possible israel station called Οι παραπομπές δεν είναι διαθέσιμες στους επισκέπτες. Εγγραφείτε ή Συνδεθείτε. Their live stream sounds pretty much like what I heard in Crete.

BUT: It is located almost 900 km from Xerokampos (plus there a plenty of other stations broadcasting on / near 100 Mhz which are closer). I understand that Οι παραπομπές δεν είναι διαθέσιμες στους επισκέπτες. Εγγραφείτε ή Συνδεθείτε (which are common in the mediterranean area) were good on this particular Wednesday. But still - 900 km? I find this hard to believe... Has anyone of you experienced something similar? How can I verify If I really tuned to this station?

Probably you recived the station from israel.the tropospheric ducting conditions help the signals to travel over 1000 kilometers.In western greece i recieved stasion from Libya from a distance of >1000 kilometers.In summer and good weather all is posible.In a strate line from crete to israel is only sea and that make in to easier.

Yes, the station is from Israel.  I received the same station in the island of Karpathos, just to the east of Crete, several times this past summer.  As explained by Nektarios, this is due to tropospheric ducting.

As a ham radio operator, I have managed to send a 5W signal over 400km away at 145.7 MHz.

It is all about antenna and propagation.

Tropo ducting occurs frequently where large masses of hot air right over sea, "trap" the signal between the sea and the colder masses above, forcing VHF and UHF signals to follow earth's curvature instead of heading straight out to space.

But it requires a solid path of warm air to have a large distance covered.

Thanks everyone for the replies, so it was indeed a station from israel. I think this is very fascinating. I reminds me of my youth, when I used my small short wave radio to listen to stations from all over the world.
